The stepper motor or stepping motor is a permanent magnets electric motor widely used in several fields such as industrial automation and robotics.
Stepper motors are synchronous brushless motors with a high number of poles, typically 50 polar torques. As the stepper motors are synchronous motors, they need an electronic control to regulate the current in the stator phases generating a rotating magnetic field that allows the permanent magnet rotor to rotate.
Stepper motors main feature is the high torque at low rpm (revolutions per minute) and the possibility of a accurate positioning even without feedback sensors.
For years, stepper motors have been considered as low level motors compared to brushless motors; today, thanks to digital electronics and advanced stepper technologies, stepper motors gaining market share in many fields and are widely used by the industrial automation’s designers.
High Efficiency stepper motors: what does it mean?
“High efficiency” is the performance optimization in terms of torque compared to the current absorbed by the stepper motors and therefore to the thermal dissipation. Stepper motors are often used in open loop without any feedback sensor and by setting a fixed maximum current value.
This explains why it is important to have motors (stepper motors) that can deliver high torque even at low currents.
Ever Elettronica developed a wide high efficiency stepper motors range thanks to the use of high quality materials and a design that minimizes the distance between rotor and stator (air gap).
