What is Profibus DP?
Profibus DP is a communication protocol developed in the 1980s and primarily promoted by Siemens, and it has been the Siemens PLCs’s main fieldbus until the introduction of its successor ProfiNET.
The excellent communication speed (up to 12Mbit) made it one of the fastest fieldbuses until the arrival of the Ethernet standard in the industrial world.
Having been adopted in their PLCs by many of the main manufacturers (Omron, among others), it turned out to be the most popular fieldbus in the industrial automation world until a few years ago.
Which are the advantages of Profibus DP?
- The Profibus DP fieldbus is a protocol created to be used in the industrial automation field
- The Profibus DP fieldbus is a very popular fieldbus in systems with Siemens and Omron PLCs
- The Profibus DP fieldbus is a fieldbus characterized by a high data exchange rate (up to 12Mbit)
Profibus DP fieldbus: what does Ever Elettronica offer?
Ever Elettronica introduced support for the Profibus DP protocol in 2004 with the GWC controller, a unit that includes motion controller, gateways and PLCs in a single device.
The GWC unit, acting as a gateway, has made it possible to create cost-optimized automatic machines, being able to use cheaper fieldbus devices (CANopen and Modbus RTU fieldbuses).
The programming flexibility of the GWC (just one device with motion controller, gateway and PLC designed and manufactured by Ever Elettronica) allows you to quickly and easily define the meaning of the maximum 192 bytes of I/O that can be exchanged with the PLC.
A few years later the experience gained in the Profibus DP development on the GWC allowed Ever Elettronica to realize the programmable 2-phase stepper motor drive with PLC functionality SW1A4185F161, of Slim Line Series, for those applications where the use of the GWC unit does not was required.
